The story behind this recipe
I have to confess something…
I am a bit of a diva when it comes to smoothies! I want it all and I want it perfect! *blushing*
That said, my morning smoothie has a much bigger role than just being a smoothie. On week days, it usually is the first thing I drink in the morning before I walk out the door, and most of the time, the only thing I have for breakfast. So not only does it need to be packed with enough calories and essential nutrients to wake me up and ensure that both my body and brain function efficiently and effectively until lunchtime, it also has the added pressure of putting me in a happy mood, so that I can have a positive and productive morning.
This implies the following:
- I cannot drink the same smoothie two days in a row or else I get bored. My morning smoothie has to be different from yesterday’s. Different in taste, but most importantly, in color!
- The color has to be pretty and bright, like straight out of a paint tube or a box of crayons —most likely a consequence of my upbringing in a painter‘s home filled with vibrant colors. #momsfault
- The texture has to be very smooth, not too thick (even if it turns into a delicious cream pudding in the end) or worse… too watery.
- It has to be mostly made from ingredients at fridge- or room-temperature, as starting the day with brain freeze would make me cranky…
- And of course, it cannot contain any apple, peach, nectarine, kiwi, cherry, plum or melon, because, let’s be real, I would hate to start my day playing Snow White! (Do you know about oral allergy syndrome?
As a result, I am always experimenting with smoothies and pack the kitchen with a variety of recurring and new ingredients every week. For instance, you will almost always find bananas, oats, berries, frozen mango, and vanilla extract at our house (unless it is grocery day), but depending on the season, you will also find grapes, pears, pineapple, oranges, etc.
Of course, my experiments don’t always go as planned, but although I do have the occasional bad smoothie days, I also have made some great discoveries, like the one I am sharing with you today!
The health benefits of this recipe
It is always better to combine great taste, beauty, and health for a breakfast that looks good and makes you feel good. And this is exactly what my Grape Berry Smoothie does!
Not only is it filled with vitamins and antioxidants to boost your immune system and energy level, but its vibrant purple color and smooth texture will bring a smile to your face.
The banana is mostly here for texture, but it provides much-needed fuel to start your day, and part of your daily needs in fiber and protein.
The berries and grapes create this amazing color and add the perfect amount of sweetness while being packed with antioxidants that are significantly more powerful than vitamins E and C, and help reduce the risk of certain illnesses.
Red grapes are also a wonderful addition to your weekly diet as they contain resveratrol which helps boost cognition.
Bonus: studies have found that resveratrol can contribute to reverse signs of aging by repairing your collagen, and help tackle other skin issues such as acne!
So all in all, this makes the perfect breakfast to start a happy and productive day.
A few tips for this recipe
When you plan on making smoothies for guests, don’t forget to pick a non-dairy milk (plant-based) that not only fits the type of allergies you have, but also the food allergies your guests might have.
In addition, make sure the oats you buy are processed in a gluten-free certified facility!
If you prefer your smoothies more liquid, only use 1.5 tablespoon of oats.
And if you are in a rush, you can skip cutting the strawberries and grapes in half. However, I always like adding that step as, if your blender’s blades are not sharp enough, your smoothie will come out with little annoying pieces of unblended fruit.
Grape Berry Smoothie
- 1 banana
- 5 strawberries
- 10 blackberries
- 10 raspberries
- 10 red grapes
- 3 tbsp oats gluten-free
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ginger extract
- 11/4 cup non-dairy milk
- This is as simple as it gets. Peel your banana, then wash the rest of the fruit.
- Cut the strawberries and grapes in half.
- Place everything in your blender.
- Blend on high for 2 to 3 minutes until smooth.
- Serve right away.
